Bumpers and shocks prevent overextension.

But I suppose that a back-yard mechanic can mal-engineer a suspension and have problems.

I had a '54 Jeep pick-up that a previous owner had flipped the spring mounts. The shocks were too long, and on just the wrong kind of bump a shackle would flip up/inside, making the spring rock solid. Was that a PITA to get un-flipped- a jack between spring and frame, crow bar, and SPOI-OI-OING, tools aflying.

But other than less friction meaning less damping, meaning bouncier ride, I don't see how slipperness causes overextension.

1,000 pound load? That's a station wagon, not a truck! ;)
