Not sure what you mean by, "I wonder if removing the springs from the design caused undue stress/breakages to trucks?

The trucks springs remain in place and functional. Also the plow is suspended by springs when it is lifted allowing it to give somewhat when being transported in the raised position.

The design was called the Model DS by Good Roads which stood for "Dodge Special". It was designed for the Power-Wagon. The front of the truck will actually raise slightly when the plow is lifted. All of the 1,000 plus pounds of snowplow, and the additional weight of the front of the truck, is then resting on the booster cylinders, not on the truck's springs. You kind of loose active suspension when transporting the plow, but the plow can float slightly from being suspended from springs, and the tires have a lot of give with all of that weight. The system was not designed for the truck to travel at a high rate of speed with the plow raised anyway. It was designed for the plow to be on the ground and working.

It seems like the competition had no reason to copy the design because all of their plows were of lighter weight. The Good Roads Model DS is really a commercial state, county, or township plow as apposed to an occasional user plow.
