The standard rims on the 1/2 ton are not the correct rim for the 9.00 x 16 tire. It is not wide enough. The 9.00 x 16 uses a 6.5" wide rim. The 1/2 ton rim is 5.5" wide.
If you get the correct rims for the 9.00 x 16 tires you can bolt those to a 1/2 ton axle. Just do not use the standard 1/2 ton rims with the 9.00 x 16 tire.
Remember the 9.00 x 16 tire is significantly heavier and the axle shafts and differentials are smaller in the 1/2 ton. You may see more axle component breakage if you "push" the truck hard.
