Allen,
On the back of my alt is a threaded connection for the pos side of the battery. I connect that to the pos on the starter. There is also 2 more connections which are 1/4 spade connections marked 1 and 2. #2 jumps to the threaded connection #1 goes to the + side of the ammeter. I also have a ground wire going to the case of the alt. I put my - side of the voltmeter to ground and the + side to each of the spade connectors and I get voltage on both with the key off.
