The altenator should have diodes on it already. I think you should check to see if there is any power at the field windings terminal when the key is off. there shouldn't be. That is assuming your altenator has this terminal. I haven't seen the one wire altenators yet and don't know if your using one. on my WDX I have an older ch**y setup with an external regulator. if the regulator was stuck I think it would keep the field windings energized with the key off.
