A quick easy and effective method for checking to see if an alternator is charging is to touch something metal (screwdriver blade etc.) to the center of the back of the alt. when the engine is running, if it has magnetic pull then it's working. Should have enough magnetism to hold a small pair of vice-grips on it's own.
