In case it isn't immediately obvious, the loop needs to be at right angles to the length of wire, so you can extend it in the hole and slip it on the end of the shaft....
Somewhere in my shop I still have that broken stub I pulled out of the Olds, as a reminder of the past. I was so proud, and the old man had a big grin on his face when I pulled it into the sunlight.
