Using the outer end of the shaft (you already have removed) as a forming die, make a nice, round loop in the end of a piece of gas welding rod, brazing rod, or even coat hanger wire. This nice, round loop should be JUST big enough to slip on over the end of the shaft.

Reach in and carefully work it on over the end of the shaft stub deep in the dark hole. Then pull on it and the loop will tilt just enough that it binds on the shaft and will not pull off. You can pull it right out, with LOTS of force, if necessary.

When I was a kid, I broke an axle shaft on my 1953 Oldsmobile car. I asked the neighbor, an old man, how I could get it out. I asked this question as I looked deep into the dark hole at the end of the shaft.

He said, "Use a piece of wire."

I had to have him explain it for me...
