I used the backhoe to clear out the mats of cattails this afternoon. The initial result was faster water over the bridge, causing a bit more erosion than before. However, the level dropped about an inch in very short time.
I then spent about 3 hours laying on my belly, leaning over the downstream edge of the wooden span trying to clear debris out from underneath with a potato fork. After about 2 1/2 hours of pulling little bits out, the balance tipped and it was like a giant toilet was flushed and a lot of water came boiling out the downstream side. Man did that feel good! I worked another half hour clearing more crud from under there but the skeeters finally got the better of me and I retreated back to the house.
It will be interesting in the morning to see if the level is lower, or if there will be another huge clog of these darn cattails.
Tim
