I put in a piece of thin oak plywood and put a nice finish on the inside. I then glued a piece of 3/8 inch closed cell foam which I then covered with vinyl, The edges of the vinyl are held in place by the original rubber lock ring that VPW sells. It has done very well and no leaks in the 9 years it has been there. I also put high density plastic fillers on the ribs to bring them up to the level of the bottom of the plywood. this also allowed the roof to have the rounded shape of the ribs. If you do not put the fillers in the roof will bow down to touch the center of the ribs which leaves a low spot for water to collect.

When I bought the truck. The roof had a piece of plywood screwed down and then fiberglassed along the edges to seal it.
