The "old school" test was to dismount the fuel pump with the gas lines still connected and work the lever by hand.

I've been messing with these engines snce 1958 and I have found variations in the fuel pumps that cause the pump lever to go off to the side of the cam lobe. Works briefly and then NOTHING.

Some rebuilt pumps contact the lobe at the top of its rotation while others with the same part number contact the lobe on the side of its rotation. This shouldn't make a difference - but it does sometimes.

And some rebuilds don't replace the lever pivot pin which allows the lever to miss the cam lobe, or they replace it with one that does not have the correct diameter to hold the lever in position.

"Old School" still works for a lot of us.
