Actually, I had a 1/2 ton WC that had a 265 with factory dual carbs and dual exaust (engine was from a '50 Dodge, and 1100-16 XL's (the old French Desert pattern), and it sucked. I went faster when I got up to top speed (took forever) and the braking was terrible. I also used twice as much fuel for about a 10% HP gain.
You need to squeeze as much power as you can out of the engine. look into a rodchester carb off of a GMC 265 or better yet get a 2bbl adapter and run a progressive 2bbl carb. Pertronix ignition might help stabalize your spark and some headders would'nt hurt down the road either.
There's a guy here in town that runs 3 Mikuni carbs on a 230 (Think intake headders) in a '49 B1B 2wd truck and he gets up and boggies down the Interstate with it.
