But crash boxes have straight cut gears, not much thrust to be reversed under coast. But transfer cases do have helical cut gears, they thrust one way under a load , and the other way under coast. Maybe the bearing at the input yoke in the transfer case? It's up high, above oil level, and thrust forward under load, back under coast.

If the truck is together, you can put the rear axle on stands and run it while listening to each bearing with a 'sounding bar', a rod or long screwdriver that you hold against the bone in front of your ear. And/or push the little flap thingus (latin medical jargon) closed with the butt of the handle. A bad bearing will deafen you. Don't touch the spinning part, just push it against the housing near the bearing in question. Try it first on the generator or water pump to see how much it amplifies. I use my radiator screwdriver, about two feet long, for getting to lower rad hose clamps- and transfer case bearings.

Tuck in long hair, wear short sleeves, a u-joint can wind up your whole body into the the works. And keep your feet out from under the wheels- if it grabs your bonddockers for traction, the whole truck can come off the jackstands and run your pasty white ass over.
