The only transmission swap that makes any real sense is to swap in a NP 420 trans from an M37. They have the same bolt pattern as the crash box that you have. That way you don't have to change the bell housing or any of the drive shafts. Do not use a NP420 from a ff PW as they have a different bolt pattern and you will need to change the bell housing.

Your not going to get a heck of a lot of roadability with an overdrive unless you live in the flatlands. You could go 4.89 gears but like with the overdrive you would not gain much. Once you hit a hill you will just slow down. If you want a roadable truck you will need an engine swap (V8 or 4BT diesel) and then you needs trans and a whole bunch of stuff including disk breaks.
