Hi Steve,

- This rod works using either AC or DC current

- 3/8 is easier to grind down using a round drommel stone than a long bead. Also it keeps the cast iron cool to prevent cracks

- No preheat required

To repair your block the crack

- You can use either machinable or non-machinable nickle rod

- "V" the crack 1/16th

- Drill 1/8 dia. hole, 3/8 out from end of each end of crack. This is to prevent further cracking of crack during welding

- Start at drill hole to fill and weld about an inch towards center of crack, stop and peen while while weld is cooling, but not to much peening or the weld becomes brittle. Peening produces a tighter weld.

- Start at opposite end, repeat above alternating ends until you finish at center of crack.
