when something happens in the cooling system , i have been fooled many times by what looks simple but, is some what more complicated . you can ruin a engine quicker by over heating. faster than if you ran it out of oil , done that my self.once on my big tractor i had gone less than a quarter mile it overheated so bad it warped the head and the block so bad i could not even pull out the cylinder liners . sometimes its just a rad seem that opens or something opens it up ,like a lot of pressure . dont expect the rad cap to vent a blown head gasket or a really over heated engine . once and only once i changed out a rad that was blown out only to watch it blow to pieces minutes after i started the vehicle up , after that expense (out of my pocket). i always ask WHY the event happened AND I TEST EVERY THING . i would put the stat in a pot with a thermometer test it , pressure test the rad cap , pressure test the cooling system for leaks , check the flow and the core condition of the rad, fan belt and its tension, even ignition timing can cause over heating ,and check for bubbles in the cooling system to indicate a head gasket problem also you test the coolant now for headgasket problems , with a test strip . good luck i hope its just a stat ! ~ J
