Diode is optional, just leave the white wire off.

The white wire is the 'excitation circuit'. It's needed on new alternators, but on old used or rebuilt doesn't need it- there is enough residual magnetism to get her going without any juice to the white lead. At least the one I put in my FFPW works with the white unhooked.

Or, instead of a diode, use an idiot light, like the factory did.

The little red one goes to the battery, that's the "sensor' wire, makes sure that you get 14v at the battery. Old wires and cable don't work as well, so you may need 15 at teh alt to get 14 at the battery.

The big wire (out put)goes to the ammeter, on the side opposite the battery connection. Or direct to the battery +, if no ammeter.
