OT Wiring help on alternator on tractor

Need some help on wiring an alternator on an older diesel tractor for my Dad. Wiring is a rats nests and unsafe so starting from scratch. He's been running it but pulls the battery out to recharge it every so often and I want to fix it for him. Mounted a 3 wire GM alternator up and need a wiring diagram. A buddy said you need a 10 ohm resister or light but couln't remember the wiring details. Anyone have a source of info or could send me a SIMPLE diagram? I'm not that good with electrics so I need it spelled out for an idiot ;) Thanks for any help, Kevin
