Actually he is a bit mistaken in the way he is looking at the issue. He is making an emotional judgement call based on his unscientific opinion of smell of exhaust. A human produces much worse smelling exhaust, particularly when that human eats alot of granola.

Secondly, to evaluate it properly one must look at the vehicle in a bollard pull test. In this situation the vehicle is measured for its pulling power versus hp. A Power Wagon with a flathead 6, 230 has a 74hp motor which can outpull (low/low) from a deadstop most any modern production gasoline truck, therefore it is far more efficient in its fuel to power ratio.

In other words, it gets far more energy from its fuel than does a modern car. We wont bother to tell him that the modern car with the same gear ratios as the PW would do better.
