Lots of distributors have loose springs when not running. But even cranking speed gets the weights spinning enough to take up the slack.

DO NOT mess with those springs unless you intend to fiddle around with re-curving the advance. A distributor machine is the best way to do that. Otherwise, you can spend your whole vacation fiddling.

That said, a re-curve is a good improvement to take best advantage of 87 octane as opposed to the 65 octane these engines were tuned for at the factory.
