I have a couple of the 1941 dated jerry cans. It looks like yours has has the cap replaced.
Also mine were painted.
If you find a cap for the 1941 jerry, the one that was on it had two ears sticking up, the later ones had 4. A later cap would be correct, as I am sure they were replaced as the war went on.
