Good job! I'm a little late to respond to your 6 or 12 volt question but did want to chime in. As Steve mentioned below I have been very curious too about when the change over occurred to 12 volt along with the other changes that occurred in 1956. My truck, serial number 83947680, has 6 volt and the other early features - 2nd series bed, non-synchro trans. I put together some info at the below link.
Add your truck to the Registry when you get a chance and we can compare what you have to others in the Registry from the same vintage.
