There's a beast in Russia that's very similar to our Moose. Unless you look close, it's hard to tell the difference. I ran across an article in an old book that had a picture of somebody riding one and told how they were being domesticated in that country. I did a little more research and it appears they're not doing it any more, but during communist times they made a real effort to domesticate them for milk, draft, and even for riding. One catch was that since they eat brush rather than grass, they couldn't be kept in an ordinary pasture. The farmers fenced off long strips into the woods so the moose could browse for their feed. Supposedly by taking a calf from its wild mother as soon as it was born, it could be raised to be quite docile. They had them coming back to the barn to be milked just like dairy cows. The advantage of them for riding was that they could travel through brush, swamps, and snow much more easily than horses. I even came across a story of somebody escaping from a Siberian prison camp by riding a moose. We have moose around here and I always like to watch them. I think it would be great to try what the Russians did, but there's no way the fish & game people would allow it.
