For some reason that I don't understand, motorcycle batteries still seem to be sold dry. I have two dry 6TNs (big military batteries) that I got as seconds from the good battery store in Everett. They told me that when I got ready to use them they'd give me some electrolyte to fill them with. There are two reasons for shipping them dry. One is so they can't spill even if the battery truck rolls over a cliff. The other is to preserve the life of the battery. Once a battery is wet, it starts to degrade even if it isn't used. By storing it dry until it's needed, you keep it fresh.

I agree that the instructions Mark was wondering about are unnecessary. I gave him the full technical explanation because I think it's always good to know the actual meaning of technical language, but as a practical matter, if the new battery starts the vehicle, which any new battery should do, you don't need to do any special charging to it.
