U-joints and tubular shafts are not exactly shear pins. Bigger u-joints may wear longer, but broken axles out number broken stock u-joints by about a gazillion to one.

I have seen twisted off drive shafts, but that was in a big truck shop where gobs of torque was applied to megatons of load. I doubt that any 6-7,000# pick-up sized truck has enough resistance against the torque to suffer a knotted drive shaft. It's the tires that slip under excessive load, no matter the drive line.
