I hear you about high water. I'm sorry to hear about your friend getting drowned. Unless your life is in danger, there's no reason to drive through water too deep or muddy to see the bottom. Lots of people try it and stall out. A few find out the hard way that the bridge or culvert that used to be there is gone.

Even with big tough trucks with plenty of weight and high clearance, I can't see the point of risking water getting into the axles and who knows where else unless I really had to get through. Even the military TMs for all the M-series trucks say that after fording you MUST at a minimum re-pack the wheel bearings and grease all the zerks, and you probably need to change all the gear oil too. This was for relatively new and well-maintained trucks. Old trucks with marginal seals are almost certain to let water into all kinds of places where it shouldn't be. I don't like packing wheel bearings. It's not worth it to me just to show that my truck can go through deep water.
