Depends on the conditions. Do you want the tire to float across the surface or do you want it to dig in.

Deep mud, snow and sand = wider tires.

Icy = narrower tire.

Thin mud with solid surface below = Narrow.

Hard surface and roads = narrower tire.

Most people run to wide of a tire. There is no reason to run the 35"+ tires on the road like a lot of people do. All they are doing is wasting gas and wearing out the steering and suspension parts. The tires are usually way over rated for the vehicle load. Besides they jack them up so high to get the tires on they become a lot less stable.

People do not believe when I say that I can get 38 to 40" inch tires on my truck with no lift or cutting. I say it is simply in the design of the truck.
