Yes you can hand stone the jaws. Ideally a small fine or medium stone that is say 1/4" or 3/8" square by 4" long. Something like that. Same kind of stone you would use to sharpen a knife blade only small so it's not ackward to hold. A machinst supply house. Look on the net for one. Just rub it back and forth on the flat part of the jaw. Use a magnifier on your head so you can see what you're doing. Might use a little wd-40 with the stone.
Glad you found the problem. Wish I could fix mine. Still can't figure out how they come apart.
