Also, as MMS alluded, the little brass pointy-thing is used to 'jump the gear' to get the needle pointed to a vertical '0'. But that has no bearing on accuracy, just where the needle points.

If you drop it, the gears might jump, as in above. That's why they come with the little brass gismo. Every time you use it, run it shut to '0'. Make sure it is closed, no grits holding it open. Just hold it up to the light. You can see light leaking through a slit that is only a couple gazillionths of an inch, no light = zero. Twist the dial to make it read zero. Then you can use your 1" standard. Or the three sides of a good 1-2-3 block. It should read '0' at each side. If it doesn't. I doubt if you can do anything except clean the gears.

I'll guess that MMS's tool has a grit stuck in the gear, not the track.
