I can vouch for this trick, not that Paul needs it. I removed exhaust manifold studs on a 315 engine and they came right out. One had just enough sticking out to get a vice grip on it but it to came out with a little back and forth turning. Like Paul said it doesn't need to be overheated, the wax draws in like solder.
