The gooseneck really is the way to go if you can. My topper won't allow it though.

My factory hitch had some problems as well. The bolts are the metric equivelent to grade 8, but the formed brackets started to tear. In fact, this happened on the trip to Tacoma, when I was unable to hook up with you, several years ago...'member? I was hauling the Black Forest Fire Truck from PA.

When I got home, I modified the stock hitch and have had no more issues with it.

Bottom line is you need to be comfortable with your equipment. If you are having second thoughts about the strength or integrity of your hardware, you are adding mental fatigue the mix and that's never good. So go with what makes you feel safe.
It's sort of like the Zen of trailering...oh man, I shouldn't have started down this path...
