Every area has it's own indigenous species of wood that will work. The eastern side of the country does have lots more hardwood. I've used Southern Yellow pine for flooring. It's an excellent product, but I don't think I would use it for a truck bed. I used well seasoned local cottonwood for the deck of an 8' by 18' flat bed trailer 20 years ago and that wood is still on the trailer, solid as can be. We poured old used motor oil diluted with diesel oil all over the wood and let it soak in. Tamarack (western larch) would do just fine. White oak will be available in s2s.
