With my trucks (stock 230 L-head, 4.89:1 gearing, and 9.00x16 NDT tires) I get about 7-8 mpg. This is back and forth to town about 13 miles away, stop and go in town, and gently rolling countryside. It does not seem to make any difference whether I have a full load or not. I run on the governor near 3000 rpm and about 55 mph.
On long trips, it is a different story. I have taken both trucks on several trips of 7 hours one way. I have gotten about 13 miles per gallon. This is mainly on 2 lane roads with some 4 lane, slowing down for small towns, and larger hills that require downshifting.
Both engines have about 25-30 thousand miles since last rebuild.
Now when Spence and I take our Power-Wagon trip up route 421 from North Carolina to Lake Michigan, we will compare notes and get back to you. ;^)
