I would modify one detail. Rather than trying to synchronize turning the starter switch on the dead vehicle, and touching the jumper cable to the post as described, it's easier to have the "driver" just hold the starter switch on, and have the person with the jumper cable touch it until the engine starts and then remove it. This ensures that there isn't even a fraction of a second when the full 12 volt power is going anywhere in the 6 volt vehicle. The jumper cable connection effectively becomes the starter switch. The switch on the 6 volt vehicle should of course be in the "ign" position so it will get spark.
