I will add one more good reason to buy cheap tools. That is so that they're on hand where you need them. By keeping a basic set of wrenches, screwdrivers, and pliers in each vehicle, I don't have to put my good toolbox in whatever vehicle I'm driving at the moment. Also, I work on things at my office/shop, at my house, and at my cabin. The good tools are usually at home or at the shop, depending on where I'm currently doing the most work, but it's nice to not have to go get them just because I need another box wrench or some vise-grips.

For my situation, I like to have one set of good tools, but plenty of sets of cheap ones so I don't have to go get the good ones wherever I'm working. I've already told my Sears stories. I won't buy any more tools from them. They're too expensive for the quality. My dad's 1950 Sears socket set and tool box are still part of my "good" tool collection, though. If I'm buying cheap tools, I want to pay a cheap price, and that usually means Harbor Freight. I know this is blasphemy to some, but to me, the cheap tool I have on hand when and where I need it is more likely to do the job than the good one that I left back in the shop. Also, if somebody's going to steal tools from my cabin or my vehicle, I'd rather have them steal cheap tools than good ones.
