I had kittens back in '82 when I figured out that the Holley fuel pump had gas flowing through the motor. I guess it lubed the brushes.
There just ain't no oxygen in a fuel tank. It has all been used up, slowly, by the gas fumes.
I'll bet the factory purges new tanks with CO2 before filling. After that, gas fumes won't ignite without oxygen.
That all said, I heard my brother make a KA-WHUMP and launch a 62 Valiant about 6 inches into the air. He was cutting it up with an oxy-acetylene torch, and pierced the tank, blowing in enough oxygen to ka-whump. Would have been funnier if he wasn't in the trunk at the time. Gave him a bit of a kick. No fireball though, not enough oxygen. or gas?
Gosh, we had fun in the old days...
