I see that about the sender's cost. But, M37 tanks, when found, are going for around $100 used, with gunk in them. Add in the renewal process cost, and we are talking expense.
If one already had an M37 sender, could you modify it to use in this tank? After all, it has never had gas in it, so could you mig in a plate if needed to use another sender?
