How'bout your cam? If compression is bad, it could easy be the cam, or even burned valve seats. Incidentally, dodge military ambulances (318's coincidentally), 77'-78 were routinely left idling for hours, and at low oil pressure the REAR two cam bearing are starved, and nearly always have less compression-and have symptoms very similar to what you've described. If you D500 had to idle much, or had anemic oil pressure; bye-bye cam lobes! Thats my 2 cents worth!
