Remember everyone, we're talking about a 3.9L 4cyl (about 239 cubic inches) vs. a 440 ci V8. Most convertors will find used 3.9s and the cost factor moght be close to that of a 440. As far as the non-economic issues with diesels: you have to like them. I LIKE the "noise" (the wonderful purr) and I even like the "bouquet". If you want a motor that you can't hear, feel and detect with your other senses, well, a diesel isn't for you, unless you want to spend $40K on a new truck with tons of sound insulation. Actually, the nature of the behavior of the governor at lowish rpms and varying but lowish loads makes it ideal offroad - they just putt over obstacles at idle; there's much less need for playing with the accelerator pedal and the clutch in low 1st and low 2nd when off-roading. Especially these industrial type long stroke motors with big displacements per cylinder.
