The 440 in it's various combinations made anywhere from 350 lb-ft in 1973 and later up to 495 lb-ft in it's 6 pack(three two barrel carbs) version. The single four barrel version put out 480 lb-ft in 1970-71 bone stock. Yes, a Cummins can be made to "safely out torque a 440"(probably does out of the box) but also consider the trade off. That new truck payment could sure do an awful lot to that older truck and your insurance will stay the same. Also the better fuel economy of the diesel will take forever to pay for itself(if ever). I talked to a guy who had a new V-10 Dodge and asked him why he didn't get the cummins. He said that he had one previously and didn't like the noise. With the power of the V-10, he would never go back. I love my 440, I built it mild and it will pull anything I care to hook up to. I get about 10-14 mpg with it and I don't have to search for diesel. Either way you go though, it's still a MOPAR. My .02 worth.
