I also have a 1998 quad cab(4 opening doors, but the back are suicide doors)2500 (3/4 ton). I have 4x4 long bed 3:54 gears. I get 17 - 21 mpg daily commuting (at 70 - 80 mph). I regularly run a cab height leer cap. Almost every weekend, we load up an 11-1/2' fully equipped truck camper(about 2700# loaded), and hook up a 2-horse bumper pull trailer (about 5300# loaded), plus all our supplies, feed, and food. We average 14 mpg towing through the mountains of northeast PA. We rarely slow down under 60 on any interstate hill. I do wish sometimes that I had 4:11 gears, but I like to cruise every other tome at 80 with the tach at 2200 RPM with automatic and 245 tires. You should probably go to www.turbodieselregister.com to gather more info. You will hear the good, bad, and ugly of every detail on the trucks. Hope it helps. The only true drawback is the noise both in the cab and outside of it. Forget about ordering at a drive thru with the engine running. I also hav to agree that after 1998 there have been little problems with the automatics, but they do happen as they do in standards also.
