I've got a 79 and love the full time 4x4! You can change out the hubs, but you will have to change the transfer case. Basically, not worth the effort or money.
The transfer case positions are as follows- Lo-Lok (low gear, front and rear axel same power), Lo (low gear, front and rear axel different power), Neutral (obvious), Hi (hi gear, front and rear axel different power, normal position), Hi lok (hi gear, front and rear axel same power).
Your 360 4bbl may be original, but you could get up to a 440 in there. That was the last year of the big block trucks. The 360 will have plenty of power, but a big block will drop right in with few mods. 78 was also tha last year without catyalitic converters, so enjoy your legal smog! ;-)
I've owned a bunch of these "D" trucks, and love them all! Parts are getting hard to come by though.
