Braden made the LU-4, not Garwood. The LU-4 is also rated at 7500 lbs, not 10,000.

Thus, this is not an original M37 winch.

However, it is my understanding from a couple of folks that some units fitted Garwood winches onto their M37's. One M37 I am looking to buy has a 10,000 pound Garwood winch on it, supposedly depot installed.

So, while not factory original, it may well be typical for certain units.

As for the original application, I don't know for a fact, but it may be that these are off of a CCKW. The CCKW used either a Heil or Garwood 10,000 lb winch, and the driveshaft input is in the same location as a LU-4. The Garwood is Model 2 U512. I have not checked to see if there is a model number on the Garfield winch on the M37 I'm looking at. Conjecture would be that when the military scrapped CCKW's, they might well have salvaged the winches to put on other vehicles.
