As the other Steve pointed out, yeah, check that master free play.
Or, were the shoes just adjusted too tight? Was the truck dormant for years? It's possible that the wheel cylinders were stuck due to rusted up pistons. Maybe the heat generated by the overheat loosened them a bit.
At any rate, you probably should take the brakes apart to check everything. How old are the flex hoses? If more than 15 years, don't take a chance. Replace them too.
