I just meant that I used one of those cheap digital multimeters that they sell all over the place. The last few I bought were $2.88 apiece at harbor freight. Dollar stores, liquidation places, and the cheap tool bins at auto parts stores usually have them. At that price, it's easier to just leave one hooked up wherever I need it (like on the battery maintainer) than get my good Fluke meter from wherever I last used it whenever I want to check the battery charge. Unfortunately, there's no easy way to adapt it to an instrument panel mount since the display is rigidly mounted parallel to the circuit board and the power supply (9 volt batter) must float relative to the ground of what you're measuring so you must always use a battery in it.

One warning about the el-cheapo DMMs -- they sometimes go berserk when measuring the battery voltage in a vehicle with the engine running, especially if it has an elctromechanical voltage regulator in it. The cheapies are no good at filtering out electrical noise like the good ones are.
