norm - do you think the high price of diesel is some high level decision to stall the production of high mpg diesel rigs? if we were to remove blends from gas and create a national gas blend and allow high mpg diesel cars, fuel prices would go down. unfortunately it is going to take $6.00 fuel for an extended period accompanied by shortages to shock the public into forcing action by the makers and the govt. unless you beat the public into submission, nothing will happen quickly. i think that the future 'hod rodders' or tuners will be kids converting cars to diesel and the coolest kid will get the highest mpg!!!
