Reversing to disengage..

i have never understood why it was necessary to reverse to disengage auto hubs.

i asked a mechanic buddy of mine and he couldnt explain the operation either.

is it because auto hubs only engage when forward movement is applied? and will only disengage in reverse?

I do agree that auto hubs are unreliable at best.
