This implies that each successive statement is smaller, less important, paling in comparison to the previous one that it immediately follows. Liken it to a reverse snowball effect. The concept could be compared to a downward spiral, a visual metaphor in print. What better way to drive home the point of his rant than with a subliminal message that snips away at the umbilical cord of the subconscious. It kind of leaves you feeling drained, hopeless, destitute, wanting more.
Then, when once we sink to the very bottom, the lowest possible point, the dregs, he will introduce the "<" symbol. We will then find ourselves feeling less than anything that comes afterwards....the sly devil....
