When it comes to software, like auto mechanics, there are always a certain number of people who don't understand how it works but believe firmly in various folklore they heard somewhere. A lot of the folklore revolves around keeping the computer "cleaned up" by deleting programs, running "defrag", deleting rarely-used files, etc. Except in very specific instances, such "clutter" doesn't slow down the computer, nor does it make other programs crash.

I very rarely get a duplicate message in Thunderbird, and when I do, it's invariably when something happened to interrupt the download process. I certainly have never tried to delete or "organize" my messages to try to prevent this problem. My email files, which date back to 1999, and which I ported over from Netscape, are in the hundreds of megabyte range, so if having too many messages in my inbox (or any other mail file) caused problems, I'd be having problems.

I agree about the lack of professional support, but in my experience, whenever I've tried to get real tech support form Microsoft, they want to charge me $50 or more just to talk about it. Given a choice between no professional support, and professional support that's so expensive I don't want to pay for it, I'll doing a lot of googling and trying to figure it out on my own. I've honestly never had a problem with Firefox or Thunderbird that I would have thought of calling tech support about anyway.
