In 1964 when a dollar was backed by silver, an ounce of silver was worth about a dollar. And you could buy three gallons of gas for that ounce of silver/dollar, Today an ounce of silver is worth $20.50 and a gallon of gas is only 3.20 or so. The price of gas has not gone up at all. The value of the dollar has plummeted.
